This card shows a view of a military base in Upstate NY. I see hundreds of military horses and soldiers tending to them. There are rows of military tents up on a hill. The card front is printed and reads Gen. Grants Headquarters And Cavalry Horses Pine Camp, Copyright 1907 By H.M. Beach. With the success of the summer maneuvers at Camp Hughes, a permanent training area formally known as Pine Camp was founded in NY State. Legislation was passed in 1909, which established the "Pine Camp Military Reservation." Land acquisition and temporary building construction began in 1910. Pine Camp was essentially a temporary, seasonal tent encampment established every summer north of the Black River. In 1935, Pine Camp hosted the largest peacetime maneuvers held to that date. At that time, 36,000 Regular and National Guardsmen from the First U.S. Army conducted division-sized field maneuvers. As the U.S. Army began serious preparations for World War II, great improvements were made in these field maneuvers. The card back is printed and reads Beach-Series Post Card Genuine Hand-Finished Photograph. The card back is divided and is not postmarked. Condition is good to very good as shown.
