Description: A fantastic original WW2 "SECRET - DEFENCE AND TOPOGRAPHICAL OVERPRINT" map of a stretch of the RIVER RHINE entitled "REES" which was prepared in the run up to "OPERATION PLUNDER" (the Allies' bid to cross the River Rhine and push deeper into German territory). GSGS 4414 Series, Sheet No. 4204. It's an incredibly detailed map with a scale of just 1:25,000, and its purpose was to provide the exact known locations of all manner of German defensive positions on the immediate Western approach to the Rhine, as well as a number of other defensive positions on the East bank and beyond once the River had been crossed. REES was actually one of the chosen locations for the Allied crossing, so many of the locations on this map were critical to this 'make or break' operation that paved the way for the advance to Berlin. The back of the map is taken up with a large "DEFENCE LEGEND" explaining the various symbols used. The main map also includes the most important TOPOGRAPHICAL features of the landscape, such as road and waterway widths, woodlands etc It was produced in November 1944 and retained officially, eventually receiving an ink stamp removing its "SECRET" classification. A subsequent ink stamp removed it entirely from the official record when the Government storage facility in which it was housed was closed down over twenty years ago. As a result, its condition is amazing. Measures 63cm x 50cm. Will be rolled carefully and shipped in a cardboard tube.
