Alongside Major Generals Henning von Tresckow and Hans Oster, Stauffenberg was a central figure in the conspiracy against Hitler within the Wehrmacht. Shortly following the failed Operation Valkyrie plot, he was executed by firing squad. As a military officer from a noble background, Stauffenberg took part in the Invasion of Poland, the 1941–42 invasion of the Soviet Union in Operation Barbarossa and the Tunisian campaign during the Second World War. ** Countess Nina von Stauffenberg (German: Elisabeth Magdalena Schenk Gräfin von Stauffenberg; 27 August 1913 – 2 April 2006) was the wife of Colonel Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, the leader of the failed plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler on 20 July 1944. Following the plot's failure, she was arrested and imprisoned, during which time she delivered her youngest child. After her husband's failed attempt to assassinate Hitler (he was summarily executed the following evening), the Countess von Stauffenberg was arrested by the Gestapo and taken into custody under the ancient Sippenhaft law reinstated by the Nazi government. Her five children were placed in an orphanage in Bad Sachsa, Lower Saxony, under the surname of Meister. At the time of her husband's death, Stauffenberg was pregnant and gave birth while imprisoned in a Nazi maternity center in Frankfurt an der Oder. That same year, her own mother, Anna, died in a Soviet detention camp. -------------------------------------------------------------BERTHOLD SCHENK GRAF VON STAUFFENBERG GENERALMAJOR A.D. FRIEDHOFSTRASSE 1271570 OPPENWEILERTELEFON (07191) 4 45 78TELEFAX (07191) 4 51 21 3. 10. 1996 Dear Mr. Bumball On my return from the island of Elba I found here the fresh delivery of "fan photographs" as hoped - and, of course, at no cost -, and I now hasten to send you a copy as promised in my letter of 27 August. I am afraid it dates from early 1994, but then it is now two years that I have retired. In case you wonder: general officers wear the beret of their original corps, in my case the black Armour beret with the Armoured Reconnaissance badge. Recce are a separate corps from Tanks, and we very proudly consider ourselves the true successors of horse cavalry. We have a very active officers' association of which I happen to be the current vice-chairman. We survived the first restructuring after the fall of the Iron Curtain reasonably well with the loss of only two battalions out of eleven but two new ones established in East Germany, but the second wave hit us badly with the loss of another four, among them the one I commanded from 1972 to '74, and right after Italy I had to go up to Munsterlager to attend its disbandment ceremony - very sad. I have not heard from Heimeran directly after my mother's birthday party on 30 August where he was in good form, but now my mother tells me that she recently got a telephone call from him from Hong Kong, apparently at the end of a trip to China! No doubt I shall hear more about this shortly.I would love to visit you on the occasion of another visit to the United States but, alas, there does not seem to be one forthcoming in the foreseeable future! For today, Kindest regards Yours Sincerely Berthold Graf Stauffenberg. CONDITION IS EXTREMELY FINE.
