U.S. Model 1840 Heavy Dragoon Cavalry Saber & Scabbard Click images to enlarge Description For Consideration is a Rare Original Tiffany & Co. New-York / (P.L.D.) U.S. Model 1840 Heavy Dragoon Cavalry Saber & Scabbard Original, early war, Model 1840 cavalry enlisted dragoon saber complete with original metal scabbard. The ricasso bears the stampings of P.D.L and of Tiffany & Company. Enlisted sabers manufactured by maker P.D.L. (P. D. Luneschoss) of Prussia (Germany) were imported by retailers / assemblers such as New York's Tiffany and Company who sold them to the U.S. Ordnance Department. Made for cavalry, this high-quality M1840 saber is undated, features a steel blade with a flat back and measures 35½” long with a width of 1 3/16”. Saber has a hilt of black painted steel as does the pommel cap, knucklebow and two-branch guard. Clearly marked on the obverse ricasso of the blade is the strong stamping of “TIFFANY & CO / NEW YORK” in block letter format. Blade reverse ricasso bears the mark “P.D.L.” in a serrated oval. The dusky-gray blade with its hatchet-type point is free of any etching and is in good condition though is has been over cleaned. The blade edges bears evidence of stone sharpening and has several tiny nicks on the edge from battle use, else very good condition. Exhibits a light sheen with just the normal pinprick rust pitting and age coloration overall as well was horizontal scratches going down the length of the blade due to some over cleaning. The Leather and Wire wrap have been professionally restored over the original wood handle and are the only parts of the sword not period to the time. Metal Guard shows original Browning as does the metal Scabbard which was commonly done by the officer's to keep the glare down. Detailed Description From what we were told, this sword has had full restoration work. Original leather washer pad is missing. Grips are tight and consist of a turned wooden handle wrapped with new replaced dark brown bridle leather and encircled with twisted, brass wire wrap which has been replaced as well. Brass wire still tight. Blade shows signs of a bit of aggressive rust removal and possibly over cleaned, showing very light horizontal scratches going down the blade but should polish out quite easily. The imported, indented iron scabbard exhibits a smooth dark browning patina with light pinprick rusting overall. The Guard also has been browned most likely during the War. The unmarked throat retains the two small set screws. Large drag bears no stampings. Iron bands are tight and hold the two sword suspension rings. Original scabbard to this sword its sword perfectly paired though does not lock into place and moves freely due to the missing insert to the opening of the scabbards throat. A fine, strong battle used specimen of an early M1840 heavy cavalry saber and scabbard which went through a very intensive restoration project about 10 years ago and the before and after images are incredible. The overall length is 41 inches, with a 35.5 inch blade. This Cavalry sword was found in an old Military trunk in a Victorian home in Wiscasset Maine back in 1981 and has been on display in a private Military Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts ever since! This finely crafted Tiffany & Company Civil War Cavalry Sword will be an excellent addition to any Civil War edged weapon collection for display or futher restoration work.
