Description: This listing is for a set of hard to find vintage MARGHAB placemats in the SCALLOP pattern, #658. 'MARCASUAL' Vintage mid 20th Century. The Scallop pattern #658 is created with the trademark 'MARCASUAL' weave, a less formal, loosely woven linen. The 8 "natural" colored linen placemats are finished with expertly hand embroidered bright cobalt blue scallop border. The placemats measure approximately 18" x 10 1/2". Appearing to have been rarely used - the set is in wonderful vintage condition, with no holes, tears or stains. Constance Leiter owned and operated a very fine specialty shop on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City 1940's - 1970's. The MARGHAB SALON was located in only high end department stores and 3 boutiques in US and Australia, including Constance Leiter's from 1938-1963. MARGHAB linens were produced on the Island of Madeira from 1932 to 1978 by native embroideresses employed by Marghab Linens, Ltd. South Dakota native Vera Way Marghab and her husband, Emile, established the company in 1932. After his death in 1947, Vera continued to supervise the linen design and operation of the company for nearly 30 years. The collection was given to the SDSU museum by Vera Way Marghab in 1970. Mrs. Leiter traveled to Madeira several times a year to have her own unique designs hand embroidered by the embroideresses of the island. Constance Leiter designs are considered to be among the finest in vintage Madeira linens and are highly collectible and very hard to find!
