RARE Patriotic WWII U.S. Navy Commemorative Quilt, Signed & Dated "1949!"

Description: This OUTSTANDING cotton WWII commemorative U.S. Navy quilt is all hand pieced, hand appliqued and hand quilted, with stars, stripes, appliqued submarines, eagles, chevrons, battleship, anchors, and other U.S. Navy symbols. Preliminary research suggests that the "0-4 65" embroidered on the submarine refers to the SS-65, built 12/4/1916 at Fore River Shipbuilding Co. in Quincy, MA, and launched 10/20/1917. After WWI it was decommissioned 6/3/1931, and was recommissioned 1/29/1941. Its final decommission was on 10/12/1945. The other ship shown on the quilt is the USS Breckinridge. Based on the insignia, the quilt likely commemorates a 3rd Class Electrician's Mate who was aboard both ships. the name of the maker, Ethel Telz (?) Wood and the date "1949" (or "1947") is on the back corner in tiny embroidery. The quilt was found in Asheville, North Carolina. It measures 68" X 100" and is in excellent condition, with the occasional small spot and no wear. The quilt feels strong and sturdy overall. There is hand quilting around and within the applique and in straight line and nautical steering wheel designs in the background, all at 8 stitches to the inch. The back is white, the hand stitched binding is solid red, and the batting is thin. One-of-a-kind WWII commemorative quilts of this quality are VERY RARE -- BEST OF KIND!
