Description: Dictionnaire Iconographique des Orchidées. 10 vol. Translated from French: Iconographic Dictionary of Orchids. 10 unique volumes. LIMITED TO 250 COPIES, ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL THE MAJOR WORKS ON ORCHIDS Author/Artist: Cogniaux, Celestin Alfred and A. Goossens Folio.[3 ring binder] (9.5" x 13") 10 volumes. 1897-1907. Cogniaux, Celestin Alfred. Brussels, Belgium. A rather unique set of 10 volumes bound as 3 ring binders containing tipped in original color lithographic plates and text describing over 700 varieties of Orchids. Each "volume" is bound in full tan calf with fancy gilt and blindstamp rule framing covers. Spines with six gilt rule separated compartments, gilt title on gilt rule framed red leather to second compartment, gilt Vol# to gilt rule framed black leather to the fourth, fancy gilt filigree frames and centered gilt devices to all others. Edgewear, rubbing to corners, spines with varying degrees of wear, Vol's XVI, XVII, XVIII, and XXI have the rings worn through the leather backstrip. Small closed tears to the heads of several volume's spines. Rubbing and scrapes to all spines with some loss of gilt and or color (see pic). Small stains, rubbing to all covers, rubbing mostly to edges. The books do not stand up well due to their 3-ring nature, evidently front heavy. Mild foxing to most pages, both on text pamphlets and color lithographs, front and rear of each volume most affected. French Language. Approx. 712 chromolithographed plates of orchids, bound scrapbook-style in 10 volumes. Each plate pasted to recto of stiff leaf along with 4-page text leaflet, approx. 75 leaves per volume. The plates measure approximately 14.5x18.5 cm (5½x7¼"), as do the text leaflets. The volumes are 3-ring binders created to compliment and mimic leather covers of Volumes XII-XXII of The Orchid Album. Creative presentation of this fabulous series of chromolithograph plates after A. Goossens, among the greatest of all orchid painters. The plates were issued in series format over the span of a decade. Not issued in any particular order, but intended to be rearranged by genera, as the drawings became available. This work was never completed. LIMITED TO 250 COPIES, ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL THE MAJOR WORKS ON ORCHIDS with plates by one of the greatest of all orchid artists. The work is made up from sections on each genus, headed by a title and 2-3pp. of general description of the genus giving an historical note about the variety and ending with an acknowledgment of the origin of the particular flower depicted in each plate. A large number of varieties had been discovered in the previous 70 years, and the mechanics of the breeding of orchids had been established to a degree that allowed for the production of a new flush of captive-bred cross-breed varieties. Belgium was at the center of the world-wide trade in orchid varieties and Cogniaux was therefore ideally placed to record this proliferation of varieties.
