Description: Very rare piece of Nemadji pottery that was not marked with the maker's mark . This piece and was possibly a test design for a new pottery type this piece stands 3 1/2 inches tall and is about 1 1/2 inches wide. It is a beautiful turquoise blue color with a literal rainbow of abstract color swirls. This pottery was made in Minnesota and came with a small paper rolled up in it telling the history of the pot and how it was made Due to the time and era that this was produced the paper has some interesting wording in it when it comes to the description of the native indigenous which makes for some interesting historical rhetoric. I believe the pot to have been made between 1929 and 1960. It was passed down to me from my grandmother who got bought it when she visited the Grand Canyon.Nemadji Tile & Pottery Co. of Moose Lake, Minnesota, began producing their swirled pottery in 1929. A distinctive product and clever marketing were the roots of their success. The name “Nemadji” is an Ojibwe word meaning “left-handed” from the Indigenous language, but was easily misunderstood to be the name of a tribe. In the information sheet that accompanied their pots, Nemadji stressed that their wares were made with the same clays and shapes used by Native Americans. The connection of this marbled style of decoration with Native American production was more assumption than fact, but Nemadji encouraged the idea. In reality, Eric Hellman, a Nemadji employee and Danish immigrant, came up with the idea to decorate the vases using simple house paint.
