Description: EBAY ID:Powerseller.407 -- Store: BestPricedStore DESCRIPTION:Rare Durham Cathedral Brass Door Knocker closely resembling the original but huge bronze sanctuary knocker known as the 'horns of the alter.'This piece is rarer since most of these knockers do not have the head protruding out from the surrounding mane. This one is in good vintage condition and is to be easily fixed to door by way of three brass screws.The knocker ring ends towards the mouth and shows two fish heads seemingly devouring the handle.If a felon having committed a terrible sin such as murder could reach the ring of the knocker he was allowed the 'peace of St Cuthbert" and made to wear a long black gown having a yellow cross sewn onto the shoulder to mark them out as a sanctuary seeker. A replica is in place today at the cathedral on the North porch facing Palace Green.
