Description: Rare DISNEY FANTASIA CUT-OUT BOOK set from WHITMAN NO. 950 with SUNFLOWER This auction is for a near complete set of pieces from the rarest of the Disney Cut-Out books. "Walt Disney's Fantasia Cut-Out Book" No. 950 was published in 1940 by Whitman Publishing of Racine, Wisconsin. I have attached a picture of the book cover for reference, but please note: this listing is only for the set of cut-out pieces shown, not for a complete book or book cover. The 26 piece set in this auction includes: 1) Mickey Mouse as the Sorcerer's Apprentice as he conducts the Bug Orchestra in a concert at Mount Olympus, with Zeus smiling down. 2) The Waltz of the Flowers. 3) Bacchus's Picnic with a centaur, centaurette and faun. 4) The Dance of the Animals with Mlle. Upanova, the elephant chorus, Hyacinth Hippo and Ben Ali Gator. 5) The beautiful background diorama with the mythological countryside of "Beethoven's 6th", and a Maxfield Parrish-like blue sky. (Only two small pieces are missing to complete the set, a black Pegasus and a Hop Low mushroom.) While this set from the book in and of itself is rare, adding to its value from a collectors standpoint is the fact that it includes the controversial character "Sunflower" which was deleted from the film by Disney. "Sunflower" depicts a young black centaurette eating a slice of watermelon. Starting with the 1960 theatrical re-release of the film, "Sunflower" was cut from the movie. In all of the various re-releases on video cassette, laser disc and DVD, she has remained missing. "Sunflower" originally appeared in the pastoral symphony section of the film and was featured in three shots performing menial duties for the white female centaurettes. That figure is the one that makes the Cut-Out Book desirable to some, today, because she is now seen as politically incorrect, and was completely excised from the film. Condition: The pieces are in remarkably good condition, having been removed from the book with care. The colours are like new. A few pieces have edge wear and/or folds. Three pieces have character names written on the backs. One piece has a small archival tape repair. The background diorama measures approx. 26" wide by 10" high. It has a 4 inch tear across the centre fold. The figures are 4" to 6" high. Please refer to my photos for details.
