Used with heavy, thick needles in sewing sails on ships, to hold and keep the needle from digging into your hand. Very nice look and nicely made of heavy leather. Very heavy and well sewn. Scans show it all. Hand slips through the opening for a firm grasp. Made to fit the left hand.In very good antique condition overall. Shows great, honest wear and use. A very nice, classic piece for your Navy or ship collection. Makes a great display item. THIS IS ESPECIALLY NICE AS IT HAS INITIALS CUT INTO IT AS SHOWN. R.G. ?? R.L. ?? Made in England, and company stamped nicely into leather.Appears to be c.1800 - 1900. Could have been used during the Spanish American War or WWI, or possibly on a commercial ship during the same period.This piece measures about 5 1/2" x 2".
