Description: This charming magazine is an original piece, from August 15, 1835, complete in excellent condition. It has articles about a Devils bridge in Wales, Porpoises, China and Tipoos Tiger. My favorite is a small paragraph, that doesn't really get to the level of an article, about America, and how all Englishmen should be saddened that this marvelous child was allowed to stray ("In beholding this fine young giant of a world, with all it's magnificent capabilities for greatness, I think every Englishman must feel unmingled regret at the unjust and unwise course of policy which alienated such a child from the parent government".) At one time, I was a dealer in antiquarian books and manuscripts, and this is one of the pieces that I have left. I have finally decided that I need to let go of all my antiquarian pieces! I really love the old stuff, so it has been hard to get around to listing the pieces that I have left! This wonderful magazine "The Penny Magazine" was published August 15, 1835, and cost 1 penny. The magazine came out every Saturday, and was published by the "Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge". This mandate gave them a really wide range for topics! This particular issue has marvelous steel engravings as illustrations. It is a complete magazine - they didn't have covers and advertisers (at least in this magazine) in 1835. The magazine originally was part of a bound book of library issues, so the spine is a bit wrinkled where it was in the book. The paper has HIGH rag content (the amount of cotton versus tree pulp), so it has lasted beautifully. The older pieces, because they have a high rag content, sometimes last better than the newer pieces from the Victorian era and later, that had more pulp in the paper, and thus more acid to cause deterioration. Anyway, the first article in this magazine is regarding a "Devils Bridge" in Wales. There were a number of foot bridges all over the world (in 1835, anyway) that were very hard to cross, and thus earned the title "Devils" bridge. This one is one in Wales, with a long discussion about it's history (from 1187), and a travelers discussion of his crossing of the bridge. The second article is about Porpoises, which a lot of folks had not heard of, in 1835. The fact that it is a mammal, was quite a big surprise, and made it a thing of wonder. The third article is about China. The article starts with the statement that the city of "Pekin" has not much changed from Marco Polo's descriptions, and that it is divided into two - the Chinese and Tartar cities. Again, it is an article written by a traveler, and is a wonderful account of the city - a description of the houses, the people and the life therein. The last article is about Tipoos Tiger - a toy that was found in a Sultan's castle after it was overtaken, that shows a Tiger eating a British soldier! JONESANTIQUES! JONESANTIQUES!
