Description: Matching Set of Two Rare 1871 Gorham Sterling Silver Salt Cellars No Monograms! Model # 220 Model Year: c.1872 Marked with the maker's mark for Gorham (with Lion Rampant), Sterling, Gorham date code "D" for 1871 Manufactured in c.1872 (see Tompkins The Handbook of Gorham Open Salt Dishes pages 66 & 139)Measures 3.1"D x 1.9"H It's peculiar that the maker's mark includes the Lion Rampant (standing), since this mark was generally used 1852 - 1865. Tomkins lists this salt cellar as circa 1872, but the date mark clearly indicates 1871. What is most unusual is that one of the salts had never been stamped, indicating that perhaps this one never made it to the jewelry store floor for reasons unknown!
