Description: This is an Estate Fresh old Santos from a longtime collector of Religious Art and Artifacts. Wow... sometimes it pays to be in line early. First one in the door and I found this guy standing on a wall shelf. Not cheap for me, but he is so worth it. Early old piece and a really fine looking carving. Since he must be a priest or Friar, I checked out old saints and found that this figure really resembles the Saint Berard of Carbio. The carving on this Santos is terrific, the details really nice. It still retains a lot of his old original paint and its just so hard to find these early old pieces. I have added a Wiki photo of a old image of Berard of Carbio, the hair cloths book at his waist and upward extended hand, and I am pretty comfortable with that assignation. I have a little info on him below. The Statue is in really good shape as described above. and I took lots of pictures. He will be a joy to anyone that chooses to own him. Statue stand 10.25" tall x 3.25" widest and 2.75" deep front to back. There used to be something tacked to his back but its long since gone. Yet the remaining tacks certainly show it being from the 1800's. "Berard of Carbio, O.F.M., was a thirteenth-century Franciscan friar who was executed in Morocco for attempting to promote Christianity. He and his companions, Peter, Otho, Accursius, and Adjutus, are venerated as saints and considered the Franciscan Protomartyrs. Expelled from the kingdom twice, they returned each time and continued to preach against Islam. In anger and frustration, the king finally beheaded them."
