Description: This PYREX Spice of Life casserole dish is a vintage gem from the 1960s. Made in the United States, it features a glossy finish and a beautiful multicolor pattern called L'Echalate. The set includes a 1 quart lidded casserole dish that is oven safe with a diameter of 6.5 inches and a depth of 2 inches. The Pyrex production technique used for this pressed glass dish ensures durability and sturdiness. Whether you're looking for a functional piece of cookware or a unique addition to your collection, this Pyrex casserole dish is perfect for all occasions. The item is in its original condition with the backstamp of PYREX. The origins of Pyrex lay in a problem the early-20th century railroad industry faced with broken lantern globes. When hot, contact by rain or snow would cause them to crack. Corning Glass was engaged to come up with a solution, which they did in the form of a borosilicate non-expansion glass formula they dubbed Nonex. While the perfect answer to the railroads’ breakage issue, it was ultimately unprofitable in that few of the new type globes required replacement thereafter. Nonex found success in other areas, however, including wet cell battery jars. When her ceramic casserole cracked, it was one of those battery jars, cut down to make a baking dish, that Corning researcher Jesse Littleton brought home for his wife to try. In her experiments with it, she found that the foods cooked faster, at lower temperatures, with the added benefit that she could see the food as it cooked. With the Nonex formula altered to remove lead, work proceeded to develop a cookware line from it, which the company called Pyrex. The unique properties of the glass made it unlike anything else on the market — it was able to withstand temperature changes, didn’t discolor, didn’t react with ingredients to change the taste of food (like cast iron), didn’t retain food smells after washing (like ceramics and earthenware), and because the original Pyrex pieces were see-through, bakers could watch the sides of their cakes, pies, and casseroles turn golden-brown as they cooked. In 1936, Corning bought a glass factory in Charleroi, PA, just outside of Pittsburgh, which had the capability to produce colorful opal glass — a tempered opaque glass with the same heat-resistant properties as the clear glass coming out of Upstate New York. Again, although this opalware was originally used on an industrial scale (to outfit military mess halls during World War II), the technology trickled into the home kitchen with the release of the iconic primary-colored Pyrex nesting bowls in 1945. Although the colorful opalware was (sadly) discontinued in the late 1980s, World Kitchen took over the Pyrex brand in 1998, when Corning once again returned its focus to scientific glassware. World Kitchen's factory in Charleroi is still making Pyrex pieces. World Kitchen LLC, however stopped using borosilicate glass and started using soda-lime glass. Soda-lime glass is just ordinary glass. and is not resistant to thermal-shock, and it could shatter when going from one temperature extreme to another. Pyrex is now the subject of a class action lawsuit in Illinois because the "new pyrex" is caused damage and injury to purchasers who expected the durable old PYREX. pyrex was originally only sold in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, while PYREX was only available second hand. The original version was PYREX, created by Corning Inc. It was made of heat-resistant borosilicate glass, which can easily go from hot to cold and cold to hot without breaking. However, about a decade ago, the company sold out licensing of "pyrex" lower case letter version only. As a result, pyrex is no longer made of a tempered glass — which shatters (read: explodes) more easily. That being said, if your dishware has the-all capitalised PYREX on the back, it’s safer to use between shifting temperatures.
