Puya alpestris is a bromeliad/perennial in the Bromeliaceae family. A native of southern and central Chile. One of the most southern species in the genus. This Puya is grown in parks and Botanical Gardens across the World. It grows to 5 feet tall with clumps of rosette spined green leaves on the bottom. The flowers are displayed on an inflorescence that reaches 5 feet tall. The unusual colors are shown in the flowers with turquoise-blue on the petals and bright orange stamens. The color combination is out of this World. They are in bloom from late winter until early spring. The hummingbirds love this one because the inflorescence has leaves that resemble perches for them to land on. Nectar puddles up in the flowers for easy access. Birds, bees, and butterflies also visit it. It prefers to grow in full sun and is drought tolerant. Zones 9-11 Germination Sow seeds 1/4" deep and lightly cover with a medium. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic but maintain a temperature around 65-75F. Germination 21-90 days.
