It is native to parts of China and India but has since spread worldwide for its culinary applications and garden appeal. This particular cultivar has purple foliage and ruffled leaves. Partial sun is probably best to avoid sunburn to the dark foliage. Flowers are very small and not showy. You can always trim flowers to encourage new foliage. I allow some of mine to flower because the small flowers attract hummingbirds. I first encountered purple Shiso in a Korean restaurant where fresh leaves and rice paper are used to create a wrapper for grilled fish! All seeds come from open pollinated plants grown in my garden in Southern California. Please keep in mind that I grow these plants for their ornamental appeal.
