Description: A REPLICA PAIR OF PRE-WW2 USMC OFFICER'S MAMELUKE SWORD GRIPS STORYIn the fall of 2020, one of my eBay customers requested that I make a 'smaller' sword grip version for his old USMC Mameluke sword that had the sword grips broken due to age. It turns out that his USMC Mameluke is of the Pre-World War 2 vintage based on the grip size and shape. Compared to the post World War 2 USMC Mameluke sword grips that I also sell in eBay, these sword grips are smaller. Usually, most sword owners would hire a scrimshaw to make new sword grips and customize with art. However, scrimshawed grips are expensive, so to be more cost effective we turn to CAD and 3D printing to create a replacement. These grips were reverse engineered by scanning, measuring and 3D modelling the original. The collector took my raw 3D printed model and installed it on his sword as can be seen on the pictures. One shipset comes with 2 mirrored grips (L and R). DESIGNThe grips were designed to match shape and hole patterns of the original ivory or bakelite plastic sword grips. The grips are printed with a honeycomb core to lighten it up without compromising its strength, very much like the Nomex® honeycomb structures in the aerospace industry. A good mixture of tradition and modern technology. MATERIALThe item is 3D printed using a plastic material called PETG, the same durable plastic used in water bottles. The item color is natural (yellowish white). INSTALLATION & FINISHINGRemove the old grips by unscrewing the 2 star screws and 1 pommel eye screw. Replace the broken grips with these plastic grips. Understanding that these swords were handcrafted and may have subtle differences in the metal grip, I left them in their unpolished 3D printed state. I am supplying it that way so you can sand and polish it to suit your sword's metal grip outline. The grips are about 2mm thick on the sides and 1mm thick in the top and bottom, plenty thick enough to sand. Remember to sand it by hand (no power tools) and increase the sand paper grip up to the smoothness you desire. You can polish or damp a cloth with acetone for a quick wipe. Do not directly pour acetone on the installed grips. STILL NOT CONVINCED IT WILL FIT YOUR SWORD?You can print the last image and scale it until the rulers in the image matches with your real rulers. Cut the image and place it on your sword to see if it is a close enough fit. If you are having trouble with scaling the provided image, send me a message and I will give you an accurate pdf image that you can just print to 100% in your printer and cut to shape and match to your sword. Please do this exercise if you're not quite sure before you order. DISCLAIMERThese grips are not endorsed by the USMC and is meant to be for a decorative purpose. Although these grips are strong enough to be a functional piece, usage in this form is left to the discretion of the buyer. You are buying these grips as a very affordable replica part to replace your sword's broken grips.
