It was authorized and is dated 1922. This note was from the third issue of currency from the newly established Republic in 1922. It was authorized at Berlin on September 15, 1922. Germany, who borrowed to finance the war, had a staggering national debt of 156 billion marks by 1918. The government printed money without sufficient economic backing, exacerbating the problem. After World War I, the value of the German currency continued to fall. The “Treaty of Versailles” required substantial reparations payments to the Allied powers. German currency remained relatively stable at about 90 marks per dollar in the first half of 1921. But, by late 1922, with French and Belgian troops occupying the Ruhr valley due to Germany’s failure to pay reparations, hyperinflation escalated dramatically.
