Description: An old tintype by unknown photographer, circa 1870s. A portrait of two young women. Tintype photographs were not made from negatives, so each one is a one-of-a-kind image; the only way they could be produced in quantity was by using a special camera that could take multiple photos all at one time, but that was uncommon. The thing that makes tintypes unique is they were produced directly upon the sheet metal, just as daguerreotypes were produced upon silver-plated copper plates, and ambrotypes were made directly on glass.
