The National Bank of Poland quotes Wladyslaw Grabski (1874-1938) who declared that 'The basis of sound economic development and the financial strength of the State is a sound and strong currency. In the belief that a currency must also be attractive, this proposed series of designs is for the new Polish euro coinage. These pattern coins feature 3 famous Poles with a modernistic eagle (designed by A. Milewozyk) added to denote the proposed positioning of the national symbol. The pattern l and 2 euro coins bear an obverse portrait of Pope John Paul II (1920 -). He was born Karol Wotyla near Krakow and after the German occupation clandestinely studied to become a priest - eventually teaching theology and ethics at the universities of Lublin and Krakow. In 1964 he became archbishop of Krakow and in 1978 the first non-Italian Pope since 1522! The 50, 20 and 10 cent coins feature Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543). An internationally famous son of Poland he studied at Krakow, later lecturing on astronomy in Rome. One of the greatest astronomers of all time he believed that Sun not the Earth was at the centre of the Solar System, and his work De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium defied the Christian Church doctrine of the time. Finally, the copper 5, 2 and 1 cent patterns feature musician Frederic Chopin (1810-1849). Born in Poland, Chopin lived and performed in Paris from 1831. He revolutionised the technique of piano playing, turing his hands outwards and using a gentler, more subtle approach. A musical genius, beset by ill-health he spent his last days in Majorca, nursed by Geerge Sand The pattern 5 euro features the portrait of Pope John Paul II. The reverse has a detailed scene based on the 19th century medal by W. Oleszczynski where Polish citizens are symbolically welcomed into Western Europe. This parallels the accession of Poland into the European Union in 2004.
