Description: This is the 1908 Humphreys edition of PLATO And SOCRATES A lovely wide margined, beautifully bound edition of Socrates Platonic Dialogues … Bespoke fine binding, around five inches by more than 6.5 tall, is bound in calf leather, with florets, original gilt and blind-stamped, set in perpendicular rows around botanical motifs, also blind-stamped and original gilt Back-strip protecting the spine features five raised bands, creating six autonomous interior compartments. Five of these panels display the binder's original repeating decorative botanical motif: the other contains the work's titling, also original gilt (note decorative ‘O’s to first and final letters of ‘Plato’ above and alongside florets) on rouge label. Decorative endpapers have a touch of Arts And Crafts influence evident in floral depictions [shown above + below] … Published by Arthur L Humphreys, London, in 1908. Although interior condition is overall good, because this original letterpress book is old, it does display minor signs of use and age — such as the usual discolouration to old paper — consistent with a printed object of this vintage.
