Lefebvre is part of a new wave of up-and-coming hand made pipe carvers from the birthplace of briar, following in the footsteps of figures such as Alain Albuisson, Paul Lanier, and Pierre Morel Sr and Jr. Lefebvre credits a wide range of influences upon his pipe-making, such as modern greats from Italy and Denmark, such as Carlo Scottis Castello and Tom Eltang, as well as more unique sources of inspiration, such as the centuries-old hunting pipes native to Germanys southern Bavarian region. As such, Tristan is equally at home crafting his own spin on the 55, the hawbill, or the Danish Dublin as he is reviving the Ulmer Kloben when he isnt inventing his own shapes, that is. While freehand pipes are typically associated with either Denmark or England (the latter largely due to the Charatan workshop), there is another tradition in freehand pipe-making that, while more minor in comparison to other countries, is nonetheless firmly entrenched as a national style. This would be the French freehand tradition, whose most iconic, modern motif is the fleur, or flower. French pipe-making, we must not forget, has a rich history of figural briar carving, with the fleur sitting on the borderline between that history and the kinds of designs common to post-war Danish pipe-makers, such as Preben Holm or Erik Nording. While Danish fancy freehands tend to be brash and assertive, however, the French style is more elegant and aspirant to a more old fashioned idea of beauty. This flame grain fleur from Tristan Lefebvre shows him leaning into his cultural heritage a little more than he usually does, following in the footsteps of French giants such as Pierre Morel.
