Description: PIETRO PAVESI (1844-1907). 19th Century ORIENTALIST watercolor of Men Playing Backgammon, 21-1/4" x 14-1/4" sight size watercolor (framed size: 26-3/4" x 20") signed lower left. On 6/4/2012 a very similar scene, almost the same size of men playing backgammon, sold at Millon & Associes, France, a 21.26" by 14.57" watercolor for $7860 including buyer's premium. See photograph 8. The piece is so similar that you have to look carefully but some of the variations in the one that sold at Millon are, the man with beard seated on the left does not have a teapot, cup and tray beside him, the man is old but not the same man, the center man looks similar but the man on the right is younger in the Millon painting. There are a few more buildings in the left open window area in the piece we have. The bench in the piece we have with the seated man on the right is much more defined. There are other variations but the paintings are very similar and artist's have done that when they have a wonderful subject to portray. Condition: We looked very closely with magnification and the only thing we saw was a little tiny possible waterspot in the doorway with blue sky on the left side. Frame has some very slight wear. Frame apparently is not original to the painting. Ships without glass! There is a note on the back of the painting from a previous owner, Bernice Sacharow of Panorama City, California. There are some incorrect statements in this note that the painting is 16th century which it is not. It is a 19th century painting. The note says: New York Museum of Art examined this picture in 1941. Confirmed was done in the 16th century (perhaps the museum told her the subject was 16th century? - this is a 19th century painting) by "black sheep of the Pavisi (name is spelled wrong) Family while he was in Morocco. The Pavisi (wrong spelling) was the most affluent and richest family in Italy. Note: Original wooden frame (we don't know if this is the same frame she is citing) Hand-blown glass broke when moving from New York to California. This note is what the prior owner is setting forth and some are misstatements.
