Description: Photograph Notes: In 1904, the Great Northern and City railway opened a short line from Finsbury Park to Moorgate. This was an underground line, but built large enough for full-size rolling stock. The line was bought by the Metropolitan Railway on 1913, and in 1933 became part of London Transport. In 1939 it was designated as part of the Northern Line, with tube-sized trains being used. However in 1975 a very serious accident occurred at Moorgate, where a driver ran through the buffers into the blind end of a tunnel with many deaths. Shortly afterwards, the line became part of British Railways, being worked by Class 313 3-car units with trains running through to such destinations as Welwyn Garden City and Letchworth. The Class 313 units continue to run it today and are the oldest electric units still in service on ex-BR lines. Loadings are not heavy and many people do not realise the line exists.
