This durable canvas tote bag was designed exclusively for a 1977 Tournament Players Championship at Sawgrass Country Club at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. This was one of the official gifts for the wives of participant golfers on the PGA Tour. The Players Tournament was held at Sawgrass from 1977 thru 1982; and in 1982 was transferred to the newly constructed Tournament Players Club / TPC Sawgrass where the Players Tournament has been held since that time. Frankie Welch (1924 - 2021) fashion designs were a popular accessory for Washington DC’s power elite; particularly with custom designs for First Ladies, including Betty Ford, and for items centered around American history. Betty Ford's evening gown for President Ford's State Dinner hosting the Shah of Iran was also created by Welch and is now preserved in the collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. The address of the Frankie Welch Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia is noted on the bottom panel of the tote. The canvas tote measures approx. 11.5" wide x 15" tall x 4." deep; with additional 5" woven handle drop. Front and rear panels feature the red, white and blue shield of the PGA Tour. Interior tag notes that the canvas bag was styled by Natco Products Corporation; West Warwick, Rhode Island." Made in the U.S.A.
