Realizing that anglers would be exerting greater and greater drag pressures due to the growing popularity of super-braids, it was decided that the main support shaft for the spool would need to be drastically oversized and triple supported throughout the frame so that alignment and balance would not be compromised under the most intense pressure. Capitalizing on their breakthrough in spinning reel drag design, Penn Engineers took advantage of the large and under-utilized area beneath the spool, allowing an oversized drag-washer to be utilized.
