The American Indians are credited with spreading it across the eastern U.S. to eastern Kansas and Texas, and from the Great Lakes almost to the Gulf. Pawpaw tree is hardy in USDA zone 4-8. It is a deciduous, often narrowly conical, slow growing tree (especially when it is in the younger stage). At maturity, it will reach 12-20 ft. tall. The pawpaw fruit is the largest edible fruit native to the U.S. and can weigh up to a pound although 5 to 7 ounces is more typical. When ripe, the flesh is soft and custard-like, with a flavor that has been described as a blend of banana, mango, and pineapple. In addition, when compared with other fruits, pawpaws are relatively high in protein and fat, with good amounts of vitamins C, riboflavin, and niacin, and of calcium, potassium, magnesium and several other useful minerals. The pulp can be mashed and substituted for bananas in cooked recipes or frozen and enjoyed year-around in ice cream and other delicious deserts. Pawpaws are delicious straight off the tree but also maintain good flavor when frozen. Asimina Triloba is a fairly small tree, with a tropical look to it. Its foliage can be very attractive during autumn when it turns a brilliant yellow. Once established, it is a low maintenance tree, resistant to disease and critters. The Zebra Swallowtail butterflies can only use Pawpaw trees as a host plant and this beautiful tree is the only invitation to bring them in your garden!
