Description: Original PAIR of WW1 AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN military maps of the ROMANIAN / BULGARIAN border entitled "BUCURESTI (BUKAREST)" & "SILISTRA". (The maps have been mounted on a linen backing as a single 'composite' sheet, and once formed part of the private collection of ALAN GRANT OGILVIE - see below for further details). Produced in 1914 by the Austro-Hungarian "K.u.k. Militargeographisches Institut" at a time when both countries were doing their best to avoid entering the War. Bulgaria joined the side of the Central Powers in October 1915, and Romania came into the War on the side of the Allied Powers almost a year later. These developments clearly made this stretch of the border along the Danube strategically important as BUCHAREST is the Romanian capital. Some evidence of margin trimming with no significant loss to the original content. This was almost certainly done when the maps were joined and the linen backing was applied. The sheet is therefore in great condition and has never been folded. Bears the stamp of "A.G.OGILVIE" in the top margin. Professor ALAN GRANT OGILVIE was an eminent geographer whose service with the Royal Field Artillery in WW1 led him to transfer to the Royal Engineers for the purpose of mapping the Dardanelles and the Macedonian Front etc. His military service in Salonika, France and the Dardanelles saw him mentioned in dispatches, and in 1919 he attended the Paris Peace Conference representing the British delegation in respect to international boundary settlements. Following WW1 he resumed his academic career, rising to head Edinburgh University's Geography Department, still finding time to become a Captain in the Home Guard during WW2. He died 'in post' in 1953, and it would appear that his private collection was bequeathed to the University. His maps were clearly his 'working tools' and he had good access to a range of captured enemy maps as part of his work. This composite map comes from a much wider collection recently sold off by Edinburgh University. Will be shipped rolled in a stout cardboard tube. Please see my other WW1 (and WW2) maps, documents, photos etc. PLEASE NOTE - Following BREXIT, items exported from the UK to EU countries now incur import tariffs..
