DREADFUL HOLLOW…is a brilliant horror film, and reflects an absolute and apparently effortless mastery of the genre—not only of its devices but also of its mythic resonance. It was written sometime in the late 1940s (my best guess) under direct commission from [HOWARD] HAWKS. In its time, DREADFUL HOLLOW (supervised by someone like VAL LEWTON, whom it would have suited) could have become one of the period’s greatest and most troubling horror films. If it were filmed today (and HAWKS has some plans for it), it could be modified to suite the talents of INGMAR BERGMAN…or ROMAN POLANSKI…but never—for instance—those of WILLIAM FRIEDKIN…. Compared to DREADFUL HOLLOW, a film like THE EXORCIST is both ludicrous and gross. Overall, the covers are bright & clean even though there is light but persistent scratching on the sides & light but persistent scuffing adjacent to the spine on the front. The corners are lightly rubbed; the spine tips are lightly bumped. There is minor shelf-wear along the edges. The spine is tight & uncreased. The text-block edges are fine. The pages are all v. bright & clean with no writing, no doodling, no foxing, no tears, etc. LOOKS UNREAD—for sure.
