Notes: Signed lower right, "L. Koke". Two untitled watercolor paintings on a single sheet, featuring a bouquet of flowers on the signed side, with a misty landscape on the back. Undated, but from the final years of Koke's life. Biography: Louise Garret Koke (American, 1897-1992) Louise Koke, born Louise Gignox, on May 25, 1897 in New York City, was a painter who, along with her lover and soon to be husband photographer Robert ("Bob") Koke (1910-1996) travelled to Asia in late 1935. By 1936, after touring Japan, China, Singapore and Indonesia, Louise and Bob arrived in Bali and decided it was there they wanted to stay. They eventually opened the Kuta Beach Hotel with Muriel "Manx" Pearson and spent the next five years developing the hotel, living among and observing the local population and their traditions. After marrying, the Kokes fled Bali on the last boat out of the island in 1941 due to the threat of Japanese invasion. Louise had earlier been married to the distinguished but drunken and philandering Hollywood screenwriter Oliver H.P. Garrett (A Farewell To Arms, Duel In The Sun). But after Garrett’s affairs had become too much to take, Louise embarked on one of her own with the tennis coach and photographer Bob Koke, who Louise met in the early 1930s when Bob worked in MGM’s production department, and began modeling for Louise. Shortly after they began having an affair, Bob became a mainstay at the Garrett’s Beverly Hills estate, coaching Oliver and his pals David Selznick and Charlie Chaplin. It is believed that it was actually Chaplin who, having visited Bali in 1932, planted the idea of visiting the island paradise in Bob Koke’s head. While in Asia, Louise created many drawings, romantic paintings, and watercolors, particularly during her years in Bali. Her works were exhibited at the Alliance Francaise (Shanghai, China) and are in the permanent collection of the Neka Art Museum (Ubud, Bali). The upper floor of the Contemporary Indonesian Art Hall is devoted to the work of foreign artists, and includes paintings by expats Louise Koke, Walter Spies, Miguel Covarrubias, Rudolph Bonnet, Donald Friend, Han Snel and Antonio Blanco. After the war, Louise continued to paint and exhibit her works after she and Bob (then working for the CIA) settled down in Virginia. The Robert and Louise Koke Collection has been established in the National Museum of Asian Art Archives, Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M.
