Description: DESCRIPTION: Fine, original, etching of the historic "Norma" tree in the Normafa natural area in the Buda Hills of Budapest Hungary. The Norma tree was an enormous beech tree allegedly planted by King Matthias Corvinus in the 15th century. The name reflects an on-location performance by opera singer Rozália Klein Schodel and performers of the Hungarian National Theater in a rendition of the Cavatina from Vincenzo Bellini's Norma. The tree itself fell on the morning of June 19, 1927 and is no longer there. This etching is matted and signed by the artist in pencil in the lower right margin, but I cannot read the name. It is numbered 123/295 in pencil in the lower left margin, indicating an edition of only 295 etchings. There is a Certificate of Original Etching on back that indicates the original etching plates have been destroyed, so no further editions can be printed. The image area (etching plate mark) measures about 6 1/2" by 7". Overall size with mat 18 1/4" tall by 14 1/2" wide. The etching is nicely double matted, but is not framed. Both mat and etching are in excellent condition.
