Description: This wonderful painting is apparently untitled, but I am declaring that it be known as ‘ The Disappearing World’ because that is the prophetic story it tells. Ludwig Bemelmans died in 1962 in New York. That makes the the power of his art in this painting all the more profound. With the brilliant use of symbolism, he tells us a story that, only now in 2018, can be seen and appreciated. The sky is filled with the narrow, narrow crescent of the waning moon. This is a time of unconsciousness, of being lost, unaware, and a time for forgetting. Beneath this moon, a group of men are gathered together as they have done for centuries. A woman, alone and isolated, sits some distance from them as she has done for centuries. She is surrounded by many amphora. She is all women who pour forth the waters of life to nurture all. Above only her, Bemelmans has painted a large electric light that is also a full moon. That is the full force of consciousness shining upon her, showing us that the flowering, the full bloom of the Feminine has come to the Arab world. Then, we still could not see. She is sitting in front of a portal that is also a tombstone. Still, many could not see that the old ways were dead. Like all true artists that draw from the deep, deep well of being, Bemelmans was painting a vision of the future. There are always many probabilities and possibilities, but this is, in fact, the destiny of now. This is the inevitable consequence of a revolution that sprung from an assault on the foundation of being a human being. When Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire on 4 Jan. 2011 in Tunis, he was doing the only thing he could do to fight for the natural rights of mankind - for dignity, respect, to sever the whip of humiliation, and to end the oppression of women by men. His fire burst open the seeds of revolt whose growth nothing can stop. unlike wars that are about greed, fueled by hatred that can only create more greed, fueled by more hatred where nothing grows and all is destroyed. This remarkable painting was purchased by our mother decades ago but the time has come for it to move on to a new owner. In gouache on board (Bemelmans' favorite medium), it measures 17 1/2" high x 25 1/2" wide and is beautifully framed. It is in excellent condition. A rare opportunity to own a most unusual Bemelmans original. Authenticity guaranteed.
