On the obverse is a blue enamel medallion depicting the Vendian crown. Depending on the duchy, the motto was applied to the red rim of the medallion: for Mecklenburg-Schwerin, “PER ASPERA AD ASTRA” (Through thorns to the stars), for Strelitz, “AVITO VIRET HONORE” (Flourishes with generic honor). The reverse of the medallion is on a blue background the golden monogram of the Duke-co-founder: "FF II" (by the name of Frederick Franz II) or "FW" (by the name of Frederick William).
