She is accompanied by the Maggies Blues Five which were named after Eva’s husband Clarence Williams’ band made up of talented Swedish musicians, to these ears at least they play the material with considerable authenticity and panache. What makes this such a great sounding disc is the combination of fabulous acoustic instrumentation, only the voice is amplified, a great venue and real being there ambiance in the sound. The presence of Taylor undoubtedly heightened the experience for the audience and band alike with the resulting joy coming through loud and clear on this fabulous transcription. This even was recorded in 1976 but thanks to the quality of engineering and equipment at the time, the tape recorder was a modified Sony TC-756, and that used to transfer it to DSD, EMM Labs converters, it sounds like it could have been made twenty years later. Interestingly the multichannel mix is in 4.1 omitting the center channel and specifying that bass below 60Hz is allocated to the LFE or sub output. It was certainly a magical night at the Pawnshop in March 1976 when a young lady of 81 completely captured and entranced the audience with her stage presence and vibrant personality. Her communication with the musicians and audience combined to elevate her artistry beyond the aural level to include that indefinable ingredient…atmosphere. This atmosphere was retrieved from the Opus 3 vaults from 31 years ago and like a good wine has aged well as lovers of jazz from the '20s will appreciate. Eva Taylor is a direct link with the great era of jazz when she was singing with the Clarence Williams Blue Five and also with Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet, who were coming to their peak as influential jazz geniuses in the mid-'20s. It looks like a CD. It plays on all your CD players. But this Hybrid Super Audio CD (SACD) is much, much more. Created by Sony and Philips – the people who invented the CD – this is actually a two-layer disc. And both layers pack an incredible story. From the earliest digital recordings and 16-bit Compact Disc on up to even the latest 24-bit recordings, digital audio has always used multi-bit PCM technology. Until now. Now there is Direct Stream Digital recording. A one bit system that´s fundamentally different. Thanks to an amazing 2,822,400 samples per second, you get audio performance that no other format can deliver. Where CD frequency response extends to 20,000 Hz, DSD technology can theoretically reach 100,000 Hz. Where CD has a dynamic range of 96 dB, DSD recording can achieve 120 dB across the entire audible range. Thanks to DSD technology, the SACD difference is breathtaking. If you care passionately about music, then SACD will inflame that passion as never before. Even the SACD´s 16-bit layer can sound better, if it´s based on a Direct Stream Digital or an analogue studio master. The Super Bit Mapping Direct process can be used to down-convert to the 16-bit CD format, which enables you to hear more of the original master. So by all means, enjoy this disc on a standard CD player. But for an unforgettable audio experience, you have really got to hear it on a new Super Audio CD player. The Opus 3 label needs no introduction to most audiophiles as this Swedish company has been around for a very long time - issuing high quality performances with amazing sound to appeal not only to the audio freak among us, but to music collectors as well.
