Old Gullah Style Coiled Basket Arts & Crafts

Description: This is a really nice, old Gullah style basket with an oval shape and flat bottom. Time has given it a nice dark patina. It looks like sweet grass coils that look a bit dried out and it needs cleaning and conditioning if that's possible, but I don't know how to safely do that. I don't know what the intended use was for this one. It has some flexibility and play in the bottom and sides which could be from age or by design. It looks like a basket that would have been possibly carried on one's head which the bottom being slightly flexible would be ideal for. It is not marked, and I am going on material and design on identifying this one, this one looks to me like a Gullah, especially since it was found in South Carolina, but I have been emailed that it is not Gullah by a basket collector. It measures approximately 13" x 11" and 9-1/2" tall. Any commentary about the item is always appreciated. Thank you for taking a look! Hopefully you'll check out my other items.
