Description: ARTIST: Frederik Wilhelm Svendsen (1885-1975). A well-listed Danish artist, who specializes in cityscapes from Copenhagen and interiors of Danish manors. He has often been called a vedutisti, who are painters, who have a high degree of details in their paintings. PAINTING: Oil on canvas. The painting is an elegant and detailed rendering of one of the most iconic churches in Copenhagen, Vor Frelsers Kirke (the Church of our Savior). Originally planned in 1617 by Christian the 4th as the church of his new quarter in Copenhagen, Christianshavn (litt: “Christian’s harbor), construction and modifications of the church underwent several phases, before, in 1752, the exterior of the church was finally completed. The last addition to the exterior would later prove to be the most iconic one, namely the beautiful spiral steeple, which is also clearly visible in the painting. Designed by Laurids de Thurah, the steeple has an exterior spiral staircase, which can be climbed for a splendid view of Copenhagen. On top of the steeple is a sphere and a man holding a flag. Today, the church largely stands as it did, when it was re-inaugurated in 1752. In the painting the artist achieves a very high degree of accurateness, which is very typical for his works. I’ll date it to somewhere between 1950-1970. Signed: “F Svendsen” in the lower right corner. SIZE: With frame: 59 cm/23.2" * 48,5 cm/19.1". Without frame: 49 cm/19.3" * 38,5 cm/15.2" CONDITION: The painting is in great ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing paint. The frame has minor scratches.
