Description: Nippon RC Berry Bowl Strainer w/Underplate Hand Painted Orange w/Gold 1911-1921 NIPPON Exquisite Decorative BERRY BOWL STRAINER w/UNDERPLATE, RC Nippon Handpainted Royal Crockery mark, ORANGE, BROWN, GREEN & GOLD, Hand Painted SHIELDS & SWAG FLORAL GARLANDS w/Small Raised GOLD Beads and GOLD Outlining, from Moraimura Bros. in Noritake, Japan, circa 1911-1921 DESCRIPTION: The beautiful hand painted berry bowl strainer and its underplate were produced using an orange, brown, green and olive green color palette with much gold. The gold is used to accent the small beading all around the design as well as to outline the flowers and leaves. The design is quite intricate. Enlarge the photos and look at it closely to fully appreciate the design. Note that the drain holes are also outlined with the small raised gold beads. CONDITION: While this strainer set is classified as used, the condition is superb. We find it remarkable that the painting shows no wear. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. See the photos. DIMENSIONS: The maximum diameter of the strainer is 7 1/2" with a height of 2 3/4". The diameter of the underplate is 8 11/16" with a height of 1 3/16". Overall, the height of the set is 3 3/8". The depth of the underplate is 1" so it can hold quite a bit of drainage liquid. HISTORY/MARKS: Morimura Bros. formed the trading and decorating company in 1876 which evolved into Noritake. Noritake Company has a rich history of producing fine bone china all the way from January 1, 1904 when the Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd - the forerunner to the present Noritake Company - was formed in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan. The first reported U.S. registry for a Noritake backstamp for importing is 1911. The backstamp on the underplate of this set is the red & green RC Royal Crockery mark. (The strainer is not marked but does match the painting of the underplate.) This mark is attributed to Noritake and its forerunner in the 1890’s to 1921 time period. In ABC’s of Collecting Nippon Porcelain, Joan Van Patten attributes the RC Royal Crockery mark #80 to the 1911-1921 time period.
