Description: NICOLAS MARCIAL GUILLEN LANDRIAN. Painter. Filmmaker. Poet. Contemporary Art.Cuban Art Cuba. 1938 - Miami 2003 • Title: Untitled • Technique: mixed / cardboard • Measurement: 38 ½ x 29 inches (43 ½ x 33 inches) • Executed: 1988 • Signed: Nicolas Guillen 1988 PROVENANCE Private collection, Havana, purchased from the original owner by the current owner. Nicolas Marcial Guillen, the nephew of writer Nicolas Guillen, served as a production assistant and documentary director in Cuba, most of which were censored and not exhibited until three decades later. Among his most important titles are En un barrio viejo (1963), awarded at the Cracovia Film Festival, Ociel del Toa (1965), which received the Golden Spike at the Seminci de Valladolid, and Coffea Arábiga (1968). His film work was considered among the most genuine of revolutionary cinema. Guillen, like many artists of his time, was not recognized for his political differences and suffered rejections, imprisonment, and that pain was poured into a pictorial work as an interior discourse of escape from his pain; they are images crowded with scribbles, crossings out, stains, and personal symbolism.
