Nicolas Marcial Guillen, the nephew of writer Nicolas Guillen, served as a production assistant and documentary director in Cuba, most of which were censored and not exhibited until three decades later. Among his most important titles are En un barrio viejo (1963), awarded at the Cracovia Film Festival, Ociel del Toa (1965), which received the Golden Spike at the Seminci de Valladolid, and Coffea Arábiga (1968). His film work was considered among the most genuine of revolutionary cinema. Guillen, like many artists of his time, was not recognized for his political differences and suffered rejections, imprisonment, and that pain was poured into a pictorial work as an interior discourse of escape from his pain; they are images crowded with scribbles, crossings out, stains, and personal symbolism. Entre sus títulos más importantes figuran En un barrio viejo (1963), premiado en el Festival de Cine de Cracovia, Ociel del Toa (1965), que recibió la Espiga de Oro de la Seminci de Valladolid, y Coffea Arábiga (1968). Su obra cinematográfica fue considerada dentro de las más genuinas del cine revolucionario. Guillen como muchos artistas de su tiempo no fue reconocido por sus divergencias políticas, sufrió rechazos, encarcelamiento y ese dolor lo vertió en una obra pictórica como discurso interior de escape a su pena ; son imágenes abarrotadas de garabatos, tachaduras, manchas y una simbología personal.
