She served as a Maine Representative, as a Maine Senator from 1949-1973. She was the first woman in Maine to serve in Congress. She was the first woman to have her name placed in nomination for president of a major party (1964), coming in second to Barry Goldwater. She has received many honors and is on a US postage stamp. The note 'My best to you both' with her signature initials on her personal stationary is included.
