Description: This is taken from the April 11, 1965 Poll Winners Concert presented by the New Musical Express, the U.K.'s top music weekly. Totaling almost two-and-a-half hours, this set offers a few songs each (totally live, never lip-synced) by the cream of the British Invasion acts of the time, including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, the Animals, the Searchers, the Moody Blues, Them, Georgie Fame, Dusty Springfield, and Donovan. Among this dream-come-true lineup are comparative lightweights and one-shots such as Wayne Fontana, Herman's Hermits, Freddie & the Dreamers, Cilla Black, and the Seekers, as well as a couple groups, the Ivy League and Sounds Incorporated, that will be totally unfamiliar to most American listeners. The sound is surprisingly good for the era, taken from the master soundtrack of the event (which was filmed for television), although the balance isn't so hot, with the vocals usually way louder than the music. None of these sound as good as the records, and in some cases, sound considerably worse (Them, for instance, turn in a couple of shambling tunes). It's enjoyable, however, and there are some rarities by a few acts that were never officially released: the Moody Blues do "Bo Diddley," and Dusty Springfield does "Dancing in the Street," and Them's rather ghastly performance of "Turn on Your Love Light" is much slower than their studio recording. Interestingly, considering the occasional assertions by historians that the Beatles (who do five songs) played badly live, they turn in the tightest and most powerful set of any of the 17 acts; the Rolling Stones (who do four songs) come in a fairly close second.
