Description: I was the Story Editor and then the Executive Script Consultant on this series. You can see my Story Editor credit (as Jewel Jaffe Rannow) on the first page of the script. By the way, if you’d like me to sign the script I’d be happy to. No charge. The script has many notes, (especially the back cover) by my then partner, Jerry Rannow, written during the production of the script. This script, The Longest Weekend was written by Carl Kleinschmitt. The Series, though Created by Gabriel Kaplan and Alan Sacks was actually based on Gabe’s stand up act which was written by Eric Cohen, the funniest man on the staff. This was a Final Draft (you can tell by the blue and yellow pages) from early in the run, Dec. 1975 VERY GOOD CONDITION. ! Welcome Back, Kotter was a mid-seventies American sitcom starring Gabe Kaplan as Gabriel Kotter, a high-school teacher who has been assigned to teach the remedial students, better known as the Sweathogs, a group to which he used to belong. Recorded in front of a live studio audience, the series aired on ABC from September 9, 1975, through May 17, 1979. It provided John Travolta with his breakout role. Welcome Back, Kotter's first season was controversial. In Boston, the local ABC affiliate (WCVB-TV) initially refused to air the show. The city was going through a tumultuous school busing program that involved widespread protests and riots, and the local affiliate felt Kotter's fictional integrated classroom would exacerbate the situation. The show became an early ratings success, however, and the affiliate relented, picking it up from episode 5.
