Description: Method of paymentTasmania Native Man - Antique Ethnic Print 1845 SUBJECT/TOPIC: Indigene de Van-Dieman 1845, Paris Van Diemen's Land was the original name used by most Europeans for the island of Tasmania, now part of Australia. The Dutch explorer Abel Tasman was the first European to land on the shores of Tasmania. Landing at Blackman's Bay and later having the Dutch flag flown at North Bay, Tasman named the island Anthoonij van Diemenslandt in honour of Anthony van Diemen, the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies who had sent Tasman on his voyage of discovery in 1642. Between 1772 and 1798 only the southeastern portion of the island was visited. Tasmania was not known to be an island until Matthew Flinders and George Bass circumnavigated it in the Norfolk in 1798-99. HISTORICAL INFORMATION: In 1837 appeared the first volume of the third edition of the "Researches into the Physical History of Mankind," and at successive intervals the rest of the work, which was enlarged to five octavo volumes: and during this period his "Natural History of Man" (the source of this engraved print) was published. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
