The genus was likely the most used medicinal plant by North American Indians with E. angustifolia being the most used species. The most common part of the plant for such uses is the root. Ornamentally, narrow-leaved purple coneflower, or simply narrow-leaf coneflower, is grown for its low-maintenance requirements and gorgeous showy blooms which can be used as a cut flower. This species is also good for erosion control. The bare stems with curved drooping pale pink petals and copper-orange cones stand out and compliment any garden companion. A more refined species than Echinacea purpurea whose narrow leaves and petals provide a diminutive appearance making it easier to combine with other plants in the mixed border. Narrow-leaf coneflower is especially attractive when interspaced with grasses, particularly clumping narrow-leaves species as found in its native habitat. Very attractive to butterflies, bees, and general pollinators. Goldfinches are attracted to the seeds. One of our most adaptable coneflowers with a high tolerance for heat, humidity, drought, and poor soils while tolerating and still blooming well in light shade. Narrow-leaf coneflower produces a taproot and clumps can be dug and replanted in spring every 3-5 years. Narrow-leaf coneflower is not commonly found at garden centers but is more widely naturally distributed than the other Echinacea species, and our most northerly adapted coneflower, from Canada to Texas.
