Description: NANKING CARGO ORIENTAL “PEONY ROCK” BLUE & WHITE BOWL - CIRCA 1750 (2). Offered for sale is an opportunity to purchase a rare Nanking Cargo Oriental Bowl with a fascinating history. In January 1752 the Dutch East India Company, ship “Geldermalsen” struck a reef on her return journey to the Netherlands, and sank in the South China Sea. Only 32 of the crew survived and 80 went down with the ship along with her cargo of tea, raw silk, textiles, dried wares, groceries, lacquer and Chinese porcelain. The cargo was recovered by Captain Michael Hatcher and his team in 1985 and sold by Christie's Amsterdam in April/May 1986 as “The Nanking Cargo” collection, some 235 years after it set sail. It is decorated in the Peony Rock pattern, Chinese Imari with a blue under glaze, and an iron red over glaze. It is painted with peony, chrysanthemum, bamboo and flowering peach on a rocky terrace on the exterior, with camellia in the interior with a trellis-pattern border. The bowl is approx. 2.75 inches tall and just under 6 inches diameter, and is offered for sale in very good condition for it’s age. However, nearly all the iron red paint has been washed off when it was underwater. Also the blue paint and the gold decoration has faded in places. It still retains the Christies Auction House “Nanking Cargo” label for lot number 3153. I have included lots of photos, please take a close look at these as they form a large part of the description.
