Description: I began this layout in 2021 with the objective of teaching myself how to make realistic scenery. I’ve spent many hundreds of hours working on it and running it. Now it’s time to make way for a larger project. Here are some descriptions of different aspects of the layout. I’m happy to respond to additional questions. Please note that the trains are shown for illustrative purposes and are not included in the sale. Construction:I used 2 inch PVC foam, covered with plaster cloth and sculptamold. This makes a lightweight (18lb) structure that is also sturdy and rigid. Prototype Railroads:The layout models the connection between the Western Pacific and Feather River Railway near Oroville California. The FRR would bring loaded boxcars to an exchange siding and take empties back to the mill at the mountain town of Feather Falls. A WP road switcher would bring empties from the yard and take the loaded cars back. Track:Track and turnouts are Atlas code 55. Track for the WP line is laid as supplied with a close tie spacing. For the FRR, every fourth tie has been removed to provide a wider and less regular spacing as is typical on branch lines. Turnouts are operated by toggle switches, which also provide power to the frog. Wiring:Either DCC or twin throttle DC analog can be used by simply changing connections on the terminal strip. For DC operation the track section in blue on the track plan can be switched from the upper spur to the lower loop using a toggle switch on the panel. Suitable model trains:The ideal locomotive for the FRR is an Atlas Shay. A YouTube video of this model operating on the layout can be found at youtu.be/1JQ94d_9WT4. The FRR also used EMD SW2 and GE 44 ton switchers. Small steam locomotives like Bachmann 2-6-2 and 2-8-0 also look good. The Western Pacific loop has a 14 inch radius and all N scale equipment including 83 foot passenger cars will run on it. Expansion:The two spurs at opposite corners make it easy to expand this layout. The suggestion shown in the shaded area, with its long, passing sidings, can run three trains on the lower loop. Shipping:Pick up from my location near Sacramento, California is preferable, but it is possible to ship this layout. I will build a crate for $250.Buyer must negotiate truck shipping and insurance.
