This hard-to-find poster (only 97 copies were screen-printed) focuses squarely on Ali's refusal in 1967 to be inducted into the United States military, which was embroiled in a bloody, multi-year war in Vietnam. Ali's controversial decision, based on his religious beliefs and opposition to the Vietnam War, made him an icon to many. Ali was convicted of dodging the military draft and banned from boxing until the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the conviction in 1971. This bold and striking screen-print, which measures 25 by 19 inches (63 by 48 cm), was hand signed and numbered by the artist, COLIN MATTHES, an American print-maker whose work has been displayed in numerous galleries and museums in the United States and Europe. The poster was made about 10 years ago for a book project by Matthes, who has lived and worked in the United States and Ireland. Matthes' poster offers a sketch of the revered heavyweight boxing champion and African American civil rights activist as well as his famous 1967 quote explaining his refusal to serve in the United States military: "NO! I'm not going 10,000 miles from home to help murder and burn another poor nation simply to continue the domination of white slave masters over the darker people the world over. This is the day when such evils must come to an end. I have been warned that to take such a stand would cost me millions of dollars. But I have said it once and I will say it again. The real enemy of my people is here." Overall condition of this handmade poster is good. Minor imperfections are possible.
