Description: MIXED LOT OF 8 VINTAGE VHS MOVIES 1. DOLLY SISTERSPinup favorite Betty Grable and June Haver star in this comedic and biographical look at the lives of Jenny and Rosie Dolly, a Hungarian sister act who took Europe by storm in the early 1900s. The story focuses on the romance between singer-songwriter Harry Fox and the beautiful Jenny Dolly. Includes the song "I Can't Begin to Tell You." 2. THE HUCKSTERSCLARK GABLE AND DEBORAH KERR Kerr made her American debut in this drama about the advertising business. The story pits an idealist against the ranks of yes-men vying for the approval of a sadistic tycoon. Greenstreet is superb as the evil boss. Don't bother with the colorized version. 3. SINGIN' IN THE RAINAfter years of honing his skills on the vaudeville stage, hoofer Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) has finally reached the top and become a swashbuckling star of the silent silver screen. Then the self-satisfied celebrity has his confidence shattered when ingenue Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) dismisses film actors as "shadows" without substance. After getting over the insult, he falls hard for her--much to the consternation of his costar, the sexy, selfish Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen), who wants Don all to herself. But Don has career troubles too. The wild popularity of THE JAZZ SINGER has studios scrambling to change from silent films to talkies, and Lina's shrill voice and Don's stiff acting left the preview audience roaring with laughter. There's only one way to save the movie and their careers: turn THE DUELLING CAVALIER into a musical, with Kathy secretly dubbing in Lina's lines and songs. But can they hide the truth from Lina? 4. MR. BLANDINGS BUILDS HIS DREAM HOUSEIt all begins when a darling smart New York City couple, played winningly by Cary Grant and Myrna Loy, decide it's time pack up their two girls and leave their jaded tiny Manhattan dwelling to build a dreamy get away in rural Connecticut. This bright comedy, directed by H.C. Potter and produced by RKO, goes on to explore in detail the harsh realities of keeping their dream alive. Not only are the Blandings besieged with local tradesman who keep upping their rates, but Cary Grant's character, Jim, is under a deadline to come up for a slogan to sell ham for his add agency, and could potentially lose his job. Under stress, he begins to suspect his wife is secretly in love with their friend and lawyer, Bill Cole. Eventually the decision to build a home outlives all logic and ends happily. The script, which is based on a novel by Eric Hodgins, is sly and confident and the performances are fast and light, making this middle-class adventure intrinsically American.5. MADE FOR EACH OTHERJimmy Stewart and Carole Lombard star as newlyweds in this delightful romantic dramedy. Stewart plays Johnny Mason, an amiable New York City lawyer who has put his career in jeopardy by refusing the hand of his employer's daughter. His beloved wife, Jane (comically portrayed by Lombard), is despised by Johnny's mother (Lucile Watson), who takes it upon herself to move in with the young couple. Things go from bad to worse when Jane gives birth to a child the family can ill afford. When the infant becomes sick on New Year's Eve, the pressure falls on Johnny to acquire medication from out of state in order to save both his child and his marriage. Impeccably directed by John Cromwell MADE FOR EACH OTHER combines laughter with tears in what is a classic, heartwarming example of true family entertainment. 6. AT WAR WITH THE ARMYDean Martin and Jerry Lewis get their first star pairing in this hilarious song-and-gag-filled comedy. The duo play Puccinelli and Korwin, pals who join the army and immediately get into a load of trouble on a military training base. Highlights include a sequence involving a noncooperative soda machine, Jerry Lewis performing "The Navy Gets the Gravy But the Army Gets the Beans," and the team's impersonation of the Bing Crosby-Barry Fitzgerald characters from the classic film GOING MY WAY.7. PRIVATE BUCKAROOThe army looks like a pretty fun place to be in this goofy curio from 1942. What there is of a story follows some lucky recruits as they go through a basic training that consists mostly of attending USO dances headlined by the Andrews Sisters (the hit girl group of their day) and the hot trumpet of bandleader Harry James. There's also some fancy footwork from "The Jivin' Jack & Jills." Drill Sergeant Shemp Howard tries hard to convince the boys to take the war seriously, but new recruit Dick Foran is much too busy wooing the Colonel's daughter (Jennifer Holt). The film concludes with a rousing montage of war mobilization footage as the Andrews Sisters sing "We've Got a Job to Do." Other songs include "Six Jerks in a Jeep," "Tell It to the Marines," and "You're in the Army Now." This is a very interesting mix of comedy, songs, and enlistment propaganda from veteran comedy director Eddie Cline. 8. THE KING AND IRogers and Hammerstein's Broadway musical, adapted from Margaret Landon's fact-based novel and the 1946 film ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM, makes a spectacularly successful move to the silver screen in the Yul Brynner tour de force THE KING AND I. Brynner, reprising the role he'd polished to perfection on stage, plays the blustering, headstrong Siamese potentate who meets his match in the form of Anna Leonowens (Deborah Kerr), the prim and proper English widow he's hired to oversee the rearing of his huge, unruly flock of children.Director Walter Lang (TIN PAN ALLEY) presents THE KING AND I, one of the most popular musicals in cinema history, as a dizzyingly bountiful Technicolor feast. Kerr (aided during songs by the overdubbed voice of Marni Nixon) contributes a dynamic performance that is every bit the equal of Brynner's transcendent, career-defining turn, for which he won an Academy Award. The delightful score, which also garnered an Oscar, includes three perennial favorite show tunes: "I Whistle a Happy Tune," "Getting to Know You," and "Shall We Dance?"
