Description: Mike Schmidt Rawlings Adirondack "Big Stick" Professional Model Game-Used Bat Photo-Matched Signature Model #154A Labeling Period: 1987 Demonstrates evidence of outstanding use with a slight handle crack. Many ball marks and ball stitch impressions are visible on the right, left, and front barrel. Ball marks include black ink transfers. Slight checking is visible on the left barrel from repeated ball contact. Also visible on the bat are red and green bat rack streaks. There is a light coat of pine tar on the upper handle. The handle of the bat has been taped with red athletic tape. His uniform #20 and the weight of the bat (33) is written on the knob. The model number (154A), order number (207), and year (7) are stamped into the knob. Mike's autograph and added notation, "Best Wishes, Jim" is on the front barrel, also in black marker. The bat is accompanied by three photos of Mike Schmidt posing with the above referenced bat. PSA has examined the photographs and have concluded that this is the actual bat depicted in the photos. There are two use characteristics of the above referenced bat that stand out in the photos. The first characteristic is the red athletic tape on the handle. The second, and most important, is the bold, black ball mark above "Big Stick" on the barrel which stands out on the bat in the accompanying photographs. Also accompanying the bat is a letter from former St. Louis Cardinals photographer, Jim Mense, who was given this bat by Mike Schmidt. Jim worked for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1983 to 2000 and took these pictures of Mike Schmidt in 1987. At the conclusion of the photo session, Schmidt autographed this bat and gave it to Mense. Mense's letter outlines the story. According to PSA, rarely do we see a bat that can be photo-documented with the player. This aspect of the bat's provenance separates it from many Mike Schmidt bats that we have authenticated. Based on our examination of this Mike Schmidt professional model bat, its player use characteristics, and its supporting documentation, we believe the bat was game used by Schmidt during the referenced labeling period. The bat exhibits heavy use and possesses outstanding player use characteristics. We have assigned the bat a grade of GU 10. Schmidt played third base for the 1972 to 1989 Philadelphia Phillies. He played on the 1980 World Champion and the 1983 National League Champion Philadelphia Phillies. Mike is a member of the MLB 500 homerun club achieving this milestone during the 1987 season, when this bat was used. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995. Please reference the scans, the PSA/DNA LOA and all supporting documentation to evaluate condition and additional details.
