Description: An original mixed media painting from American hard edge abstractionist painter George Mueller (1929-2021). The visible image measures 9 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches, it is nicely framed and matted in a tropical hardwood frame, the framed dimensions are 18 x 15 inches. The piece is initialed and dated 1960 by the artist in the lower right. There is some hazing and spotting to the inside surface of the glass, otherwise condition is excellent. George Ludwig Mueller (1929-2021) was born to an immigrant family in Newark New Jersey, he studied at Cooper Union and enjoyed early success as an artist in New York's modern art scene. By the time he was 25 years old, his work had been featured and collected in many international venues including the Brussels Biennale, the Whitney Museum of Art, The Guggenheim Museum and The Chicago Art Institute. Represented by the Grace Borgenicht Gallery, he was written up in The New York Times, Esquire, New Yorker Magazine and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1956. By the 1960's his work had begun to evolve from the New York School's Abstract Expressionism to his own brand of Geometric Abstraction. Works by George Mueller are in the permanent collections of: The Whitney Museum of American; Art The Guggenheim Museum; The Dallas Museum of Fine Art; The Newark Museum; and The Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
